Stack Science is part of the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at UC San Diego, building on over 35 years of leadership in computational innovation and scientific excellence. We are leading a new initiative to bring together SDSC’s expertise to deliver the Open Science Operating System—a unified, end-to-end research cyberinfrastructure designed to amplify impact, foster collaboration, and ensure the sustainability of groundbreaking research.

Sandeep Chandra

Executive Director Stack Science

Sandeep provides visionary and strategic leadership to a distinctive academic organization specializing in high-touch, managed IT services. As a key member of the San Diego Supercomputer Center’s executive leadership team, he oversees the delivery of services to UC campuses and medical centers, and external clientele, including federal government agencies, research institutions, academia, and industry sectors. In his role as Executive Director of Sherlock, he leads the portfolio of compliance and regulatory data services. With over 20 years of experience, Sandeep offers strategic guidance to leaders across federal, state, and academic institutions.

Sandra Gesing

SGX3 NSF Center of Excellence

Sandra brings extensive expertise in science gateways, computational workflows, and distributed computing. As a Senior Researcher at SDSC, Director of SGX3, and Executive Director of US-RSE, she leads initiatives focused on research software sustainability, usability, and reproducibility. A dedicated advocate for open science, Sandra has steered interdisciplinary projects that support researchers, developers, and institutions. Her expertise spans academia, industry, and policy, where she champions better career paths for research software engineers and drives advancements in research software practices.

Claire Stirm

Community Engagement

Claire brings extensive experience in program management and scientific community building. With an M.S. in Strategic Communication, she approaches each project with a focus on strategic planning and a growth mindset. As a co-PI of the Science Gateways Center of Excellence, Claire has supported over 250 gateway projects. She also contributes to communities focused on wildfire and climate cyberinfrastructure initiatives. Within the Stack Science Division, Claire partners with other leads to develop and implement a program development strategy that extends beyond the communities we serve.

Rich Wellner Jr.

Research Software Development

Rich leads the SDx : Software Development for Research group within the Stack Science division and is an innovative, strategic business and technology leader with decades of experience in both industry and scientific research. He specializes in the architecture and design of complex applications, product management, and strategic consulting. A customer-focused problem solver with exceptional analytical skills, Rich excels at organizing teams, driving collaboration, and transforming ideas into successful commercial solutions. Within Stack Science, he also oversees the operations of Science Gateways solutions and provides leadership for other software initiatives at SDSC.

Winston Armstrong

Cybersecurity & Compliance

Winston is responsible for the security of a large computing environment that includes both health information systems and high-performance computing systems. He leads the SDSC Security Group, provides guidance on security practices and policies, and makes recommendations for protecting SDSC and Sherlock assets. As the CISO for Sherlock’s compliance platforms, Winston oversees cybersecurity assessments and ensures compliance with various standards and frameworks. His role is both tactical and operational, balancing risk management, security governance, and compliance obligations while fostering a security-conscious culture.

Cloud & Infrastructure

Brian is a Microsoft Certified Cloud Solutions Architect with over 35 years of IT experience. He leads a team of Cloud Architects and Systems Engineers who specialize in building custom solutions that offer a wide range of value-added, turnkey capabilities. These solutions span cloud computing, compliance, cybersecurity, data management, analytics, and data science. In his role, Brian leads the ideation, design, and implementation of solutions for various program and project challenges. He also provides technical leadership and oversight for Sherlock's compliance services, which include support for both commercial and government cloud platforms.
